Freshwater.org - Meet Our Donors: Doug and Teresa Andrys
Doug and Teresa Andrys live in Waconia, Minnesota where they founded and operate a family-owned botanical business, SunLeaf Naturals. Each year they donate 5% of their profits to two environmental causes they care about: protecting pollinators and freshwater resources. Keep reading to learn their story of why they’re passionate about improving water health in Minnesota and why they invest in it to make a difference. Teresa is trained as a chemist and first got to know Freshwater in the eighties when we posted a job opening in a local paper. Teresa saw it and, as she recalled to Freshwater, “I applied for the job! I didn’t get it, but instead was hired as a product development chemist at a local bath product company – a profession I have enjoyed for many years.” Since then she founded and operates SunLeaf Naturals, a family business that uses green chemistry to create, “healthful bath, body and home products that perform well, smell amazing, and allow real plant power to shine through.” As the Andrys family grew and developed their business it was important to them to create environmentally friendly products and to give back, especially to the waters of the Land of 10,000 Lakes. In Teresa’s words, they were drawn to Freshwater’s work because, “We were impressed by the focus on science and the distribution of that knowledge to local officials.” They liked the idea of “creating change to help improve water quality on a local level.” She adds that they strive to “impress on people the importance of change being supported by science and networking with local officials.” Doug and Teresa have attended our gala for many years and enjoy supporting Freshwater through our annual fundraiser. In 2019 they even brought their children. It was a special way to expose them – all on the STEM career paths – to the impact of their philanthropy. Another one of their favorite times to donate is through Give to the Max Day. There are often matching funds available that can take the impact of their donations even farther. Every time we see a SunLeaf product or connect with Doug and Teresa, we are filled with gratitude. We’re reminded that through community support from people like them we can protect the health of our waters for generations to come. We will enjoy watching their kids continue their higher education and pick careers of their own, informed by the ethic of environmental stewardship bestowed on them by their parents. Doug and Teresa say this about their giving, “We hope that Freshwater continues its research into causes of pollution and remedies to improve water quality.” We are able to do so thanks to their generosity. Preserving our most precious resource for a half-century When I was a child, I spent most days playing outside. In the town that we lived in, every now and then the sirens would start to wail, and we’d run inside and wait for it….BOOM! The blasts from the mine would rattle the windows and shake the foundation. Sometimes, windows would break, but the mining company was always quick to go out into the community and repair any damages. What was not as apparent as broken windows, was the discharge that was seeping into the beautiful northern lakes in our area. In 1972, the Clean Water Act was enacted that set wastewater standards for industry and set national water quality criteria recommendations for pollutants in surface waters. My father, who worked for the mine his entire career, was happy to see that the lake that our little cabin was on, was getting cleaner and the fish more abundant. (Don’t get me wrong – we appreciate the work and resources that the mines have and continue to provide. The mines in northern MN historically have been and continue to be a major source of the steel we use in our everyday lives.) What happened when the Clean Water Act was enacted? The mines and other industries found a way to comply with the new rules under the Clean Water Act and continue on. Federal and state rules are essential to protect our waters, air and lands. Enforcement of the rules is essential. These protections benefit all of us. Earth Day is celebrating a 50th birthday this year! Do you think it was a total coincidence that the Clean Water Act was enacted two years after the first Earth Day? People had made their voices heard. It’s a good reminder that everyone’s actions matter and are the best way to make impactful change. Natural products, without the pollution When Doug and I started SunLeaf thirteen years ago, we wanted to create products that would be nature-friendly and replace some of the more polluting products. As a product development chemist in the personal care industry, I saw an overwhelming amount of plastic waste and synthetic chemical use; we believed there was a better way. Over the years we have: Prevented over a quarter of a million plastic bottles from being produced. Prevented over a half of ton of preservatives from entering our wastewater. Eliminated the use of 50,000 gallons of groundwater (used for diluting soaps in plastic bottles). Used only pure plant biodegradable ingredients & beeswax – preventing the use of polluting synthetic ingredients. Donated 5% of proceeds to non-profits working to help preserve freshwater resources What does this mean? Read more about plastic pollution here. Thank you to our customers – it is you who have made a big impact to protect our earth! HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!

Earthy and yet surprisingly refreshing? Yep, that's Patchouli Lime. As the temperature turns warmer and the days get longer, we find ourselves reaching for one of our newest aromas, Patchouli Lime. There's just something about the combination of citrus, warmth, and sharp greenness that feels so evocative of summer. In today's Scent Series, we'll dive deeper into the inspiration behind this fabulous SunLeaf Signature Scent, as well as give you some ideas for use at home. Background Eleven years ago, our President and Founder, Teresa Andrys, set out on a mission to leverage her decades-long experience working as a personal care product chemist to bring something completely new to the table: a collection of products made with only the best ingredients – whole plant oils, butters and waxes, and 100% pure essential oil aroma. Today, we offer a wide assortment of products in ten SunLeaf Signature Scents. Each aroma is thoughtfully created from a palette of natural raw materials – oils of citrus, flowers, resins, bark, and more; from there, we infuse our aromas into functional, beautiful products for your home – candles, pure essential oil reed diffusers, and more. With our collection of signature aromas, we offer a little something for everyone, from relaxing ClarySage Lavender to spicy Cinnamon Cypress. New to the lineup but already surging in popularity is Patchouli Lime, and with just a few deep breaths, it's easy to see why. Our Human Impact Plastic in our oceans. Polyethylene micro-beads in our seafood. "Flushable" wipes destroying our sewers and septic systems. Our human impact on aquatic and land-based ecosystems is significant – and it can all seem like more than what one person can reasonably address. But the truth is that every choice we make contributes to a broader set of outcomes, and making even simple changes in our lives – from the products we choose to purchase and use, to the way we dispose of our waste – can make a big difference. Becoming a Conscious Consumer As an environmentally responsible manufacturer, we are often asked the question, "beyond the basics, like recycling and being mindful of overall consumption, what can a person do to help preserve and conserve?" Our reply: the most straightforward thing any one person can do is simply to try to be more mindful of packaging and ingredients. It is encouraging to see more and more consumers becoming avid label readers, recognizing ingredients that may not be as friendly to the environment and choosing 'cleaner' alternatives. If you're not already a label reader, start here: avoid products that contain harsh synthetic detergents and synthetic fragrance – or, worse still, don't list the ingredients on the package at all. Opt for products that use plant-based ingredients – which are generally much more rapidly biodegradable – and essential oil aroma. Already a pro when it comes to scanning labels? Look for ways to reduce consumption of products that are packaged in plastic, whether it is recyclable or not. Opt for products that are packaged in glass or aluminum containers, and choose products that contain a minimal amount of excess packaging, like unnecessary boxes or bags. At SunLeaf, all our products are made from whole plant ingredients and 100% pure essential oil aroma; all our formulas are fully non-toxic and biodegradable. Furthermore, we strive to choose packaging options that are fully recyclable, made from recycled materials, and, in some cases, even biodegradable. Your BIG Impact – Our Thanks to You We've given you some tips about how to become more aware of how your choices impact the environment – here are some statistics about how your purchases have made a positive impact: Shampoo & Body Soap We developed our Moisturizing Shampoo & Body Soap in 2007 with the intention of providing a plastic-, synthetic detergent-, and preservative-free alternative to traditional liquid shampoos and body washes. Thanks to our wonderful customers who have chosen this product over products packaged in plastic bottles, we have: Prevented over 190,000 plastic bottles from entering the waste stream Conserved approximately 36,000 gallons of fresh water (used to dilute synthetic detergents in liquid shampoo & body wash) Eliminated the need for more than 1000 lbs of synthetic preservatives What does this mean? Read more about plastic pollution here. GreenBar Shave + Face Soap Thanks to our customers who have chosen our GreenBar Shave + Face Soap over shave products packaged in pressurized bottles, we have prevented over 10,000 cans with propellant from entering the waste stream. PlantScent® Moisture Stick Thanks to our customers who have chosen our PlantScent® Moisture Stick over stick moisturizers packaged in plastic tubes, we have prevented over 30,000 plastic tubes from entering the waste stream. The unique paper tube packaging we use for our PlantScent® Moisture Stick is fully-biodegradable. PlantScent® Soothing Body Oil Thanks to our customers who have chosen our PlantScent® Soothing Body Oil, which, unlike a traditional body lotion contains no water, no synthetic preservatives, and no plastic bottle, we have prevented both waste and pollution. Thank you! How to Do Even More As you can see, choosing products like ours can really make a measurable impact. Want to do more? Here are some ideas to get you started: Make your own non-toxic household cleaners using our Fresh & Clean Kitchen Collection plus some basic household ingredients Replace home air fresheners made with synthetic fragrances – most of which contain endocrine-disrupting phthalates – with a Pure Essential Oil Reed Diffuser Bring your own bags to the grocery store, and if you forget them at home, choose paper, rather than plastic Happy Earth Day, Everyday from all of us here at SunLeaf!

Earth Month Pick: Shampoo & Body Soap One of the first products we ever created, our Moisturizing Shampoo & Body Soap remains a top seller and customer favorite through all the ebbing and flowing trends we've seen over the past decade. Simple, effective, and made with 100% whole plant oils and pure essential oil aroma, as far as multi-functional, truly biodegradable and sustainable options go, it's pretty hard to beat. What better product to featuring during Earth Month?! Product with a Purpose Beyond merely making a product that worked well and provided a luxurious experience in the shower or bath, our objective with our Moisturizing Shampoo & Body Soap was also to create something that would help to reduce plastic waste. According to Hayley McKenzie, "a study summarized by the New York Times [found that] 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced since it was introduced in the 1950s, with around half of it made since 2004. Sadly, most of that plastic is no longer in use. Around 9% of it had been recycled, 12% was incinerated, and 79% was accumulated in landfills or the natural environment." Furthermore, McKenzie writes, "Plastic packaging, which is typically used for less than a year, accounted for about 42% of non-fiber (aka, non-material) plastic production in 2015. If current production and waste management trends continue, roughly 12 billion metric tons of plastic waste will be in landfills or in the natural environment by 2050." For consumers, this data can seem overwhelming – after all, each of us is just one person. But making conscious decisions about the products we purchase and use can not only be of benefit to ourselves – it can also be of benefit to the broader ecosystem. In summary, small choices can make a big impact. Why Ditch and Switch Our Moisturizing Shampoo & Body Soap is made in small batches with a blend of minimally-processed, whole plant oils, including olive, coconut, castor, avocado, and hemp seed oils, plus shea butter and cocoa butter. This unique blend is perfectly balanced to provide a skin-soothing, moisturizing cleanse for body, as well as a gentle and effective shampoo for hair. Fully biodegradable and packaged in recycled paper printed with non-toxic ink, each bar replaces a full bottle of shampoo and/or liquid body wash – with no sulfates, phthalates, or preservatives. 100% pure essential oil aroma provides a luxurious experience, with a variety of Signature Scent options (plus a Scent Free bar for those with sensitive skin) to help calm and relax, invigorate and refresh, and more. And with three all-new aromas to choose from – Lemon Vetiver, Cardamom Copaiba, and Patchouli Lime – there's more variety than ever, so we know you'll find a choice you'll absolutely love. Learn moreLoving Right Now: Citrus for Springtime
The variety of citrus that is available is a testament to the abundance of the natural world – lime, lemon, bergamot, tangerine, yuzu, pomelo, Buddha's hand...the list goes on and on. Each fruit has a unique taste and, indeed, a unique aroma for us to enjoy. Citrus Peel: A Boon for Flavor and Aroma As you've probably learned by now if you enjoy cooking with citrus, the vast majority of the aroma is found in the outer part of the peel, or rind, which is why its important to include the zest of the fruit in dishes, rather than just the juice, to really give your dishes a burst of bright and sunny flavor and aroma. What you may not realize is that the same flavorful essence found in the zest of citrus fruits is the source of the essential oils that we prize for their fresh, uplifting aroma. Indeed, every time you zest a lemon into a cake batter or add fresh lime zest to an Asian sauce, you are literally adding a very small amount of essential oil to your food. A word of caution, though: the amount of essential oil you actually consume when zesting a citrus fruit is small; conversely, distilled essential oils are highly concentrated, and we don't ever recommend taking essential oils from a bottle internally. How Citrus Oils Are Distilled Essential oils of citrus can be distilled in a variety of ways, but the two most common methods are cold pressing of the rind and steam distillation. While both methods yield a high quality product when done properly, citrus oils rendered from cold pressing may contain naturally-occurring constituents that make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so it's always important to read instructions for use and follow application guidelines. (At SunLeaf, we recommend diluting all essential oils in a conditioning carrier oil of your choice, such as avocado, coconut, or almond oil). A Brief Guide to Citrus Oils As mentioned previously, each citrus oil brings a unique aroma experience to the perfumer's palette – some essences are sharper and more 'green', while others are sweeter and more mellow. Here's a guide to some of the citrus essential oils we use in our Signature Aromas: BERGAMOT. Derived from Citrus bergamia, bergamot is said to be a cross between lemon and bitter orange. It has a sharp, sparkling aroma with green and floral undertones. It features prominently in our Amyris Bergamot Signature Aroma, where it is balanced by notes of woody amyris and zesty white grapefruit. Bergamot is also the primary flavoring agent in Earl Grey tea. GRAPEFRUIT. Derived from Citrus × paradisi, just as there are several color varieties of grapefruit, so too, are there essential oils of white grapefruit, red grapefruit, and others. Grapefruit essential oil has a tart, sparkling aroma that lends itself well to cleaning applications. We use grapefruit essential oil, along with tea tree and lemon, to power our Fresh & Clean Kitchen Collection. When used on surfaces, it helps to remove residue and neutralize bacteria – naturally. LEMON. Derived from Citrus limon, lemon is the tart, pucker-inducing fruit that lends itself well to both sweet and savory culinary applications. True to the fruit from which it is derived, lemon essential oil has a clean, sharp aroma. In our Lemon Vetiver Signature Aroma, it juxtaposes perfectly with earthy vetiver and aromatic lavender to provide a clarifying and uplifting aroma. We also offer Lemon as a Single-Note Essential Oil. LIME. Most commonly derived from Citrus × latifolia (Persian lime), lime adds a zesty flavor to Latin and Asian dishes. The essential oil has a uniquely green aroma that blends well with floral and woody notes. Lime essential oil provides a sharp, bright opening note in our NEW Patchouli Lime Signature Aroma, where it is balanced with herbaceous marjoram, spicy black pepper, and woodsy patchouli for a unique and unexpected experience. SWEET ORANGE. Derived from Citrus × sinensis, sweet orange comes from the same orange trees that we know and love for their deliciously honeyed edible fruit. It has a smooth, sweet aroma that blends well with many other essential oils. It features prominently in our Orange Ginger Signature Aroma, where it is rounded out with spicy notes of clove and ginger, plus refreshing lemongrass. We also offer Sweet Orange as a Single-Note Essential Oil. A Burst of Sunshine, Anytime Citrus oils are so much fun to use and enjoy – their bright, joyful aromas uplift the senses and can also be used to help purify your home. Varied and abundant, they blend well with a variety of other essential oils, from florals to wood and spice notes, lending a freshness that helps bring an aroma to life. Guest Blog: Spring Cleaning with Essential Oils By Alecia Eckerle, Retail Manager at Oswald's Pharmacy in Naperville, Illinois Originally Posted Here on February 18th, 2019. Background Last week we put out a lot of our Easter items at the store. I’m just loving seeing all the color, breaking me from this year’s winter funk. I’m so ready for Spring. So, in the spirit of Spring, I decided to do a deep clean of my kitchen and living room. I used Sunleaf 100% Pure Essential Oil Aromas to create some cleaners for the kitchen as well as the living room. Cleaning Carpet with Essential Oil Aromas I started cleaning with an easy task—vacuuming the living room floor. My goal was to get some of the winter cooped-up-inside-dog smell out of the place. For this task I tried out the Sunleaf recipe for Aromatic carpet care. Here are the steps I followed: 1 cup of baking soda 4 – 6 drops Sunleaf 100% Pure Essential Oil Aroma (I used Cedar Mint) Mix ingredients together and sprinkle on the carpet. Allow the mixture to sit on the carpet for 5 to 10 minutes. Vacuum over the area covered by the mixture (steps from the card provided by Sunleaf Naturals) My Essential Oil Aroma Cleaning Tips I decided to mix the baking soda and oil blend in a Ziplock bag. My thought was that it might be easier using a bag than a bowl to really move the oil around. This method worked out great!! I was able to get all the lumps out of the baking soda and really get the oil evenly distributed. I decided to leave my mixture on the carpet on the long side of the recommended time range (10 minutes). The smelly dog is strong in my house. The wait really worked. I am a fan of minty smells and thought mint would best cut through the dog smell. I chose SN’s Cedar Mint Blend based on those criteria. My living room now has a fresh minty wood smell. To make the scent last longer I also opened a mini reed diffuser with the same oil blend. Fresh as a minty daisy!! Cleaning the Kitchen with Essential Oil Aromas My next task was cleaning the kitchen counters. Surprise! —there is dog all over the front of my fridge, range, and dishwasher. I decided to tackle this problem with some of the All-Purpose Cleaning Spray. Here are the steps I followed: Make sure to have a 16oz spray bottle (glass if possible) 2 cups of water (soft or distilled water works best) 2 teaspoons unscented Castile or liquid soap 12 – 16 drops Sunleaf 100% Pure Essential Oil Aroma Add all ingredients to a bottle, shake well. Spray, then wipe dry (steps from the card provided by Sunleaf Naturals) Once I finished the preparation, I sprayed the blend on my counters, chrome, and other washable hard surfaces, then wiped them dry. I shook the spray bottle before each use. The cleaning blend stores for up to two weeks. My scent choice for this mix was the Orange Ginger Blend. Fresh citrus is always a great smell in the kitchen! Getting Rid of Smells in the Fridge with Essential Oils OK, first of all, I had no idea my fridge was so dirty. I really should have looked at it sooner! Anyway, the mix I used was super easy to make (and I didn’t even have a funnel. Tip: Wax paper works out great for a makeshift funnel). I followed the same steps from the Kitchen cleaner, but it was a bit easier with the wax paper. A funnel would make it a piece of cake. The cleaner smells great and cuts through dirt and oil just fine. I also felt good about using it on the microwave. I always worry about using regular cleaners in the microwave because so much of our food goes in there at some point. The essential oil spray cleaned the microwave just as well, if not better than, a regular household. The oils smell much better than traditional household cleaners too! I was espeically surprised at how much oven grime the essential oils were able to remove without even a bit of elbow grease. I will definitely be trying the rest of the cleaning recipes that Sunleaf Naturals has listed on their website’s ‘recipes for home’ card. I might even have to dive into some of their personal care recipes. Spring, here I come! Shop This Story: About The Author Alecia is Oswald's retail manager and lead gift & toy buyer.
